Paper Options

Depending on the purpose of your project and the type of printing will determine what the best paper options. Here are a few categories that should be helpful:

Folding Cartons

Thicker papers are used for folding cartons. The thickness of the paper will depend on the size of the carton and weight of the item(s) going into it. While it is difficult to describe paper thickness as you really need to have it in your hands to feel the difference, here is a list of items and typical weights which might help:

Cosmetics, CBD, and other small bottles or items: 14 pt. to 18 pt. (16 pt. and 18 pt. are most common)

Medium-sized items: 18 pt. to 20 pt.

Candles and heavier items: 20 pt. to 24 pt. (24 pt. is most common)

There are two categories of paper that are typically used for folding cartons. Coated board stock called SBS (Solid Bleached Sulfate) will give you a shiny finish and uncoated board stock such as Neenah Folding Board is a very flat, matte type finish (vellum surface) which has a very flat appearance to it. SBS coated stock only comes in white and depending on the brand used can either be a bright white or an off-white. In the Neenah line besides white, there are several popular colors available such as black, gray, kraft, and off-white. In 18 pt. or lower pt. stocks there are several other brands of paper in uncoated as well, usually in white but sometimes in other colors. Mohawk has a few lines of paper that have 18 pt. available.

Candle Dust Covers

Most of the dust covers we produce are 100# cover which comes to about 12 pt. to 14 pt. depending on the specific paper. Rarely do we go thicker than 14 pt. as it increases the cost and really isn’t necessary.

Letterpress Printing

If you project calls for letterpress printing (items such as dust covers, hangtags and cards) the best option for that is 100% cotton content thicker cover stocks which take a nice impression. Our go-to house sheet is Savoy in the Brilliant White or Natural White. We often use the 92# or 118# cover but it comes as heavy as 236#

Labels (Stickers)

While there are quite a few options for pressure-sensitive papers we carry, most of them are white or off-white. There are a few options that have a bit of texture to them as well.
